After a day at the nets practicing for the forthcoming Test match in the city against the Kiwis, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar found time to meet his old buddy, Dalbir Singh Gill. He was delighted to see Gill back on his feet and walking without crutches.
Dalbir was in coma for six months after meeting with a near fatal motorbike accident in 2002 near Nadiad. Even after regaining consciousness, he was bedridden for almost eight years. He has recovered completely now and his life is back on track, thanks to the generosity of his friend, Sachin, who paid Rs6 lakh for Dalbir's hip replacement surgery.
Dalbir and his family met Sachin on Monday evening and wished him a happy Diwali. The Gill family had brought Sachin a box of chocolates and an idol of Lord Hanuman, both gifts expressing their affection for him.
"I chose Lord Hanuman's idol as a symbol of the affection I feel for him," said Dalbir. "I feel the same way towards Sachin as Lord Hanuman felt towards Lord Ram." Sachin had invited Dalbir and his family on Monday evening to a private meeting in his hotel room in the city and had spent around 40 minutes with them.
Dalbir works as a marketing executive for a chocolate company now. "I have been able to start a second innings in life only because of your help," he told Sachin during the meeting.
Dalbir, his mother, Sukhdaya Kaur, sister Sukhbir, her two kids, Simran and Gagandip, and Gill's brother, Prabjit, shared memories of their friendship. When Sukhbir's kids bowed to touch Sachin's feet for his blessings, the cricket legend instantly said, "Not my feet. Pair to uparwale ki chhuo."
Dalbir's mother said Sachin was a god-like figure for her family. "He paid from his own pocket for my son's treatment," she said. "He gave the money not as charity but out of affection for his friend. I have always seen the spark affection in his eyes for my son."
