Sachin Tendulkar
Group Captain (honorary) Sachin Tendulkar could actually fly in a Sukhoi-30 MkI fighter jet from the Lohegaon airbase in Pune after the Cricket World Cup in April this year.
Disclosing this information to media persons in the city on Saturday, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Naik, said, “Ever since we made Sachin a honorary Group Captain in the Indian Air Force (IAF), he has had no time for us. He has been busy hitting centuries. We would like him to fly the Sukhoi-30 MkI. We feel he will be relatively free soon after the cricket world cup in April this year. This could be the best time for him to fly the aircraft.”
Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi, air officer commanding-in-chief, South Western Air Command, had told the media in Pune on January 4 that the cricketing icon’s papers were being processed at the IAF headquarters.
Coincidentally, Tendulkar, who is an IAF brand ambassador, appears on the IAF’s 2011 calendar posing in front of a Sukhoi jet in fighter pilot’s gear.
Tendulkar was bestowed with the honorary rank of Group Captain by Naik at a glittering ceremony at the IAF auditorium in New Delhi in September 2010.
“I am extremely proud to be a part of the IAF. I want to urge the youth to join the Air Force and serve the nation,” Tendulkar had said after the function.
