Sachin has big role to play this World Cup: Bedi

With present Indian cricketers hoping to win the forthcoming World Cup in the sub-continent for Sachin Tendulkar, former captain Bishan Singh Bedi said the milestone man has a big role to play in the marquee event, calling him "the finest ever sportsman the country has produced".

Bedi, one of the great quartet of spinners who graced the Indian team of the '70s, said the batting maestro has handled the pressure for 21 long years and this is the right time that he should see his team regaining the cup after 28 years.

"I want the Indian team to win the World Cup this time for (Sachin) Tendulkar. Unfortunately, he was not in the Indian team which won the Cup in 1983.

"This time, he would have a big role to play," Bedi told UNI on the sidelines of the launch of "Women's Cricket World", co-authored by former Indian women's teamcaptain Anjum Chopra here last night.

The ex-captain said, "We should rather salute Sachin's mom - Rajni Tendulkar - for giving birth to such a legend."

On giving any advice to Tendulkar for the World Cup, Bedi refused to have any for "the giant"

"He is India's finest ever sportsman. He hasn't given a single opportunity to be linked in any controversy." he said.

The World Cup title is the only missing feat from Tendulkar's cap, and Bedi feels that the batting icon, who has brought many laurels to the country, deserves it.

On the Indian squad for the February 19-April 2 extravaganza, Bedi said it was a balanced side."I believe its a balanced side. And the team has the best chance to win in the sub-continent...I am sure the team will deliver," he said.
