The 37-year-old Tendulkar, leading run-scorer in test and one-day cricket, will almost certainly be playing for the last time in the showpiece tournament he has never won.
He top-scored at the 2003 World Cup when India lost to Australia in the final.
"Most likely it would be his last World Cup," Dhoni told reporters.
"We want him to play maybe one or two more like every Indian but practically speaking you know it would be his last world Cup," Dhoni added.
"So that can be the biggest gift from the team to him. We will try to give it our best shot and make it the best World Cup."
The Indian captain rued the lost opportunity to play in front of the vociferous crowd at Kolkata's Eden Gardens after the International Cricket Council switched the Feb. 27 clash between India and England due to a delay in renovation work.
"Playing in front of 100,000 people would have been really special," Dhoni said.
"I'm just hoping that the other games that are supposed to happen there will happen."
