Sachin withdraws FSI plea, bails CM out of ‘tricky spot’
MUMBAI: Senior state officials confirmed thatSachin Tendulkar had withdrawn his application, seeking permission to build a personal gymnasium inside his house, being built on Perry Cross Road in Bandra.
Tendulkar had earlier approached the state to exclude the gymnasium from the FSI calculations. He had requested for the FSI relaxation as the built-up area approved by the BMC for the Bandra house was being entirely taken up by other constructions approved in the layout plan.
The application caught the government in a tricky situation. The development control norms lack any provision to permit the relaxation of the FSI calculation rule for a personal gym. The state also could not sanction an additional FSI for the 8,998 sq ft plot as it was in the coastal regulation zone (CRZ-II). Officials added that the maximum permissible FSI of 1 had already been allotted.
Tendulkar's application triggered a debate: While one section of residents wanted the state to give the nod, considering it to be a special case, another said the existing laws should prevail.
The ball remained in chief minister Prithviraj Chavan's court. Tendulkar, however, bailed him out on Wednesday, when the CM's office received a letter on Tendulkar's behalf saying he wanted to withdraw the application. The communication was issued by Sapre and Associates, the firm appointed to build the Bandra house. the letter states. The firm's owner, Prakash Sapre, told TOI that the gymnasium would now be built in the place of another proposed amenity.
