Calcutta: V.V.S. Laxman has few regrets, but none more than having missed making the Team India XV for the 2003 World Cup. It was a touch-and-go affair, with Laxman losing out to Dinesh Mongia. Blame it on destiny if you like, but the stalwart will end his career without having played in a World Cup. Not that Laxman isn’t tracking the ongoing World Cup. “Of course, I’m following the tournament closely, particularly India’s progress,” Laxman told The Telegraph on Monday. Speaking from Bangalore, where he’s training at the National Cricket Academy, Laxman added: “Disappointments, like losing to South Africa the other night, can happen... We’ve got to move forward and the team must play to potential.” According to Laxman, it’s okay to have a bad day in the group stage, instead of coming up short in the business end of the World Cup. “I have faith in Team India... The potential to go the distance is there and I’m backing them... I’d like to add that Sachin (Tendulkar) has been batting like a dream,” Laxman said. Laxman signed off saying “I’m praying, you know.” |
