It's an honour to share record with Tendulkar: Miandad

PUNE (India) – Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad will be happy to share his world record of playing six World Cups with India’s master-blaster, Sachin Tendulkar. Javed Miandad is the only player to have played in six World Cups, the first six, from 1975 to 1996. Speaking from Lahore, he said, “It will be an honour to share this record with Sachin Tendulkar. Till now I was the only player to have played six World Cups but am happy that now the record will be with the two players and am happier that only two Asians are holding it”. Interestingly, Miandad was also the member of Pakistan team when Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut exactly 21 years ago on November 15, 1989. The ICC has announced the appointment of Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar as the official event ambassador for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. “Yes, Sachin Tendulkar can break my record if he also plays the World Cup in 2015 (to be hosted in Australia and New Zealand). Nobody can predict about him and it is creditable that he has maintained his fitness and still playing. If he continues to be fit, who knows he can still play for a few more years,” he added. “Even I could have played for few more years but there were circumstances which forced me to retire in 1996,” he added. “The player should call it a day at the right time and not before he is kicked out from the team,” he said. Miandad made his Test debut against New Zealand at Lahore on October 9, 1976. He scored a century in this match to become the youngest player at the time to do so at an age of 19 years and 119 days. Had his parents not escaped from Ahmedabad (Gujarat), India, from Hindu-Muslim riots in 1947 after the independence of India, perhaps Javed Miandad would have played for India.
